Born and raised in Ann Arbor, I have recently returned to southeastern Michigan from Washington State. Years of living abroad the spontaneity, the wonder, and the immediacy of each of life's lessons have greatly influenced my teaching. In other words, I'm excited to bring a wide and eccentric variety of experiences into the classroom. These experiences include: starving, waist-deep in Patagonian mud; reading Borges until sunset in an Argentine cemetery; enduring a semester of full-time teaching coupled with graduate school; and teaching young people to be safe on the waters of Puget Sound.
From my own experiences in the world, I want to encourage students to explore their worlds; writing is our vehicle for this process. To follow T.S. Eliot's words, "And the end of all our exploring/Will be to arrive where we started/And know the place for the first time." Through writing, I believe that students can temporarily leave their places of familiarity and comfort, safely exploring the spaces and perspectives of others. When they return, it is to the same place-but a place made new by what they've learned along the way."
